Goal

This illustration that I made served the purpose of showcasing and practicing the style of manga, made in black and white, using tone shading and hatching to create form. It also helped me practice what the style of the manga would be.

Process/Learning

When making this project, the process was very similar to my other illustrations: sketching, lineart, and shading. There were some elements that took me a little time to figure out. The roots of the tree sticking out into the river as well as figuring out how to accurately show the flowing river using minimal line and tone was also a learning experience.

On top of that, with most things, this project gave me a good chance to practice perspective as well as figuring out which tones I should use to show the various shades of the environment, lighting, and texture. Experimenting with different combinations as well as learning how to render the light shafts breaking through the trees was a positive learning experience for me.

Conclusion

Learning how to tackle the style of most manga, that of black and white, as well as using tones to denote shading, lighting, and texture, proved to be a valuable and aesthetically pleasing experience, with an end product that I am satisfied with and proud of.
