Amarok Cover Redraw Series

Amarok Vol. 1 Cover | 2020

Redrawn Amarok Cover | 2021

Goal

This project started with an old cover for a manga that I had made as a final for my Illustration class in 2020. The goal of this redraw project was to flesh out and revamp the entire thing with new art, and creating a full cover. This was not limited to just one, as I had done two additional covers, totalling three.

Process/Learning

The process of recreating and adding to the original cover took some research, as I had to find a reference from other covers, specifically this kind of material in the West. I settled on replicating a publication known as Saturday AM, with its covers of their more mature section. Saturday PM, appearing as such. My Program of choice was Clip Studio Paint, which I used for everything from the illustration itself to the graphic design and text.

What was most interesting that I found while doing this project was formatting everything so it seemed cohesive. The difficult part was finding an appropriate font to replace the title with. I found that this font, Dyer A&C, was a good balance between the forms creating visual interest as well as appearing as a strong and bold font.

Conclusion

The story attached to this body of work has been a passion project of mine, since high school, so the way I tackled making this had to be from both the illustrator and author perspective. It had to show a craft for the illustration as well as the summary of the volume on the back cover. Turning it into a series of covers also helped create the idea of this as a multi-volume project, which I enjoyed immensely.
